“Too many Arabs”
An article in a central Massachusetts newspaper quotes me as saying that there are “too many Arabs” in Israel. The only problem is that I never said this.
I have said, many times, that demographic factors are one of the reasons why Israel should withdraw from the West Bank and why there must be a two-state solution to bring about an Israeli-Palestinian peace. [tweet_box]Calling for a two-state solution does not mean there are “too many Arabs” in Israel.[/tweet_box]
It means that there are two groups, Israelis and Palestinians, both of which have legitimate national aspirations and are entitled to a state of their own. Absent that, there will be a single state in which two peoples will live together in misery and continual conflict.
The idea that–in light of demographic, cultural, and historical realities–partition of Israel/Palestine into two states is the best solution for the problems of the region is hardly mine alone; it is the position of the President of the United States, the Secretary of State, the leaders of both American political parties, and the United Nations since 1947.
